Why is it important to check my fence regularly?
The safety of your horses is at stake, so don’t wait for something to go wrong to test your fence. Check the voltage on your fence regularly using our ElectroBraid® Digital Electric Fence Tester. It allows you track down and correct any electrical shorts. Since posts can move due to frost heave or impacts, be also be sure to check the tension on the Braid™ on a regular basis to ensure each strand is tight. Reset posts and re-tighten each strand for proper operation.
Are there any indicators that my fence is not working properly?
If you find your horses are showing less respect for the fence than normal, it is likely something is reducing the voltage on your fence, or the grounding of the fence is not what it should be.
What can I do to ensure there’s adequate voltage on my fence line?
- Keep insulators free of dirt, dust and cobwebs
- Keep the fence line clear of weeds
- Walk the fence frequently, especially after storms, to check for fallen branches or debris
- Check the tension of the Braid™ to make sure each strand is tight. If posts moved due to frost heave or impact, this can affect the tension on the strands.
- Ensure that all electrical connections remain secure
- Make sure ground rod clamps are secure and connector wire is intact
- Since posts can move due to frost heave or impacts, also be sure to check the tension on the Braid™ on a regular basis to ensure each strand is tight. Reset posts and re-tighten each strand for proper operation.
How do I test my fence?
These simple tests will assure you that your ElectroBraid® fence is properly installed and working as designed. Using an ElectroBraid® digital electric fence tester is simple.
Test the fence strands at the location furthest away from the fence ground system*
- When you are at the point of your fence which is most distant from your ground system, you should first read the voltage between the grounded line and each of the other electrified fence lines to confirm that the fence is wired properly with no electrical shorts.
- Most importantly, check the voltage between each electrified fence line and the soil under the fence. To do this, place the ground probe on the tester about one and a half inches into the soil and test the actual voltage of each positive line. If less than 5,000 (5.0) volts, you have a problem with your ground system.
- Finally, check the voltage to the soil at any high points or dry areas to make sure you are getting at least 5,000 (5.0) volts. If less than 5,000 (5.0) volts, you will need to install additional ground rods.
REMEMBER: ALL READINGS SHOULD BE OVER 5,000 (5.0) VOLTS. If any reading is less than 5,000 (5.0) volts, you need to troubleshoot and fix the problem.
How to test the fence charger/energizer
- Turn your fence charger/energizer OFF
- Disconnect the two lead out wires from your fence charger
- Turn the fence energizer ON. To test the voltage on your charger, simply apply the tester to the (+) terminal and the ground probe on the tester to the (-) terminal of the energizer. If less than 5,000 (5.0) volts, there is a problem with the energizer.
- If the energizer is OK., turn it OFF before you reconnect the two lead out wires to the energizer, then turn the energizer back ON.
- Next, test the voltage of fence strands near the charger/energizer. Apply the ground probe on the tester to the grounded line and apply the tester to each of the other electrified Positive lines, one after the other. You should read at least 5,000 (5.0) volts on each electrified line. If less than 5,000 (5.0) volts, there is a problem with the lead-out wire or you have crossed wires during installation.
How to test the earth return system
- Turn your fence charger/energizer OFF
- 300 or 400 feet from the fence charger/energizer, create a short circuit of the current in the fence by laying two or three steel stakes or lengths of pipe against the lowest, hot line of the fence, preferably where the ground is damp. DO NOT ALLOW CONTACT WITH THE GROUNDED LINE OF BRAID – it is important that the electrical current flow freely from the electrified fence lines into the earth return system
- Turn the fence energizer ON.
- Using your ElectroBraid® digital electric fence tester, apply the probe to one of your ground rods. Apply the ground pin to a small steel stake (such as a screwdriver) placed in the ground at least 3 feet from any ground rod.
- The reading on the voltmeter should be 0.3 k volts (300 volts) or less. If it is greater than 300 volts, the ground system is inadequate. You may need more ground rods.
When is the best time to test my fence
Be sure to monitor your fence on a regular schedule using your ElectroBraid® digital electric fence tester.
To check for electrical shorts, test after rain when conditions are wet because shorts are more easily detected in wet conditions.
TIP: Listen for crackling sounds or look for arcing at night to locate any shorts in your fence.
To confirm you have adequate grounding, test when conditions are very dry. In particular, test where the fence runs over high terrain or through areas that might be especially dry.
ElectroBraid® Braid will not rust, rot, lose strength due to sunlight or weathering, break when installed as a permanent fence or prove defective in workmanship or material. Any reel of ElectroBraid® Braid that is defective will be replaced at no charge to the purchaser. This warranty is in effect for 25 years from the date of purchase.

I found it to be extremely easy to use and very handy. Because of it's ease of use, I actually check the system with this tester once a month or more to make sure that the solar charger is working properly. It gives a digital readout on the voltage being put out by the base unit so I can check the efficiency at the furthest point for voltage drops,shorts, or ground issues.I would recommend this system to anyone installing or currently using an electric fence.

The Zareba tester tkes the guesswork out, and with it finding problems is easy. It would be nice to be able to measure fence voltage up to about 13 kV, but all the testers in the market stop at 10 kV.
