Great feeders until plastic feet broke By Laurel in MD

Loved the feeders while they lasted. I got two, and they lasted about four months before the plastic feet broke. The copper bases and lids are in perfect shape but since there they don’t sell replacement plastic cylinders, they have to be thrown away. I’m sure it would be great if you make very sure it can’t be knocked/pulled or fall from the tree.

Rusting By Jeff

Purchased two of these feeders six weeks ago and they already have started to rust. Mostly the underside of the top. Very disappointed.

No replacement parts By Marci

I would have given it 5 stars except for the fact that there is no replacement part for the plastic hopper. A squirrel knocked the feeder to the ground, and the "feet" on the plastic hopper broke. Can I please just buy the hopper? I see you list no replacement parts, and that's not satisfactory. I have had the feeder for a little over a year (did not keep the receipt), and I am on a fixed income and cannot afford to buy a new "whole" one. I am very disappointed because this is one of the best feeders I've had.

Sooo Pleased With These Feeders By Maggie

I have actually purchased 8 of these feeders from different companies. They were all the Perky-Pet brand. The reason I have purchased so many of them in the last couple of years is because most of the birds seem drawn to them, especially the Cardinals. Can use a variety of sizes of seed in them. The birds just love to eat from them and they are easy to clean. Lovely feeders. Veerrryyy Pleased with them and would highly recommend them for your birds also.

So pretty...a few design fixes would make it perfect:) By Dove

I too think it is a beautiful bird feeder. Here is my breakdown: Pros: Looks great Easy to fill The birds love it Cons: Very hard to clean (does anyone have suggestions?) Takes alot of time to clean and I worry germs are in the crevices in the tray. The top copper covering started to wear off after one week:(

Response From Woodstreambrands
Jennifer : Consumer Relations Representative

We recommend cleaning the feeder at least once every two weeks; more often in warmer weather. Use a mild soap and water solution and a cleaning mop to get into all the crevices. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before refilling the feeder. For bird feeders that need a little more TLC, use one part vinegar to four parts water. Rinse thoroughly and dry before filling with seed.

Beautiful feeders but... By Pete

Bought two this time. They are beautiful. In our case squirrels enjoy them too, not a problem for us. Easy to fill. I do have to say that the two we bought about three years ago 1) the copper top corroded badly (I out a coat of car wax on the new ones, will see how this works) 2) the plastic bins have clouded badly from the Florida sun and 3) the plastic coating on the hanger cable deteriorated making the top slide action difficult, then the tiny wires in the cable have begun to break. BUT they’re beautiful so I bought two new ones anyway

Love it, needs another model By Kenny

Bought thru Amazon. I like it and birds love it. Very nicely made, easy to fill. SUGGESTION: Offer a shorter, wider model holding about the same amount. BUT short enough that nothing bigger than a Cardinal will like it. Might keep the smaller birds from being bullied. Would also better keep rain, etc out of tray. Thanks.

No Replacement Parts By Birdie

It is a great, good looking feeder that many birds love. However, I would not recommend a purchase since there are no available replacement parts to purchase. If the plastic hopper breaks due to wildlife, or if it falls to the ground, the feeder is useless. The one year warranty is not good enough.

Tips

Wild Bird Feeders - Expert Tips

Hanging Your Feeder

  • Ideally a sheltered southeastern exposure location is best for hanging bird feeders since birds like to feed in the sun and out of the wind. Birds also prefer not to have any obstructions over their feeding area so they can see any predators. more»

Accessorize!

  • Bird Baths - A clean and reliable water source is an excellent way to attract birds to your yard, especially those birds that do not necessarily eat seed or nectar. All birds will seek out a water supply, not only for drinking but also for keep themselves clean and healthy.
  • Bird Houses - These are a good way to attract those species of birds that nest in holes. These structures should be made of an untreated wood (pine, cedar, etc.) and should have ventilation and drainage holes. It should be durable, and easy to check and clean. more»

Feeder Care

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What are the most popular bird seeds to use?

A: Black Oil Sunflower Seed is the most popular bird seed. It is much smaller than the traditional sunflower seed and best for those birds with smaller bills, such as the sparrow, junco and goldfinch. This seed is accepted by the greatest variety of birds.

Mixed Seed is also popular. It is best to buy the mixes that contain white proso millet, a tiny cream colored seed with a shiny shell. Mixes containing finely cracked corn and black oil sunflower are also preferred by a large number of birds.

Niger (Thistle Seed) is imported from Africa and Asia. Niger won't germinate, but it does have a tendency to become moldy due to lack of air circulation. If you notice mold on the seed, it must be removed from the feeder and the feeder must be cleaned thoroughly.

Q: How do I clean my bird feeders?

A: Before filling your feeder with fresh seed, it is recommended that the following precautions are taken:

  1. Remove all old seed.
  2. Soak feeder in water.
  3. Scrub feeder and allow to air dry.
  4. Rake and remove accumulated hulls and droppings from underneath the feeders.
  5. Spread mulch (bark or wood) under the feeder, replace mulch when soiled.
  6. Thoroughly wash hands after handling and cleaning feeders.

Q: What is the importance of providing water for wild birds?

A: Wild birds need fresh, clean water just as much as they need seed. Birds stay healthy by using water not just for drinking, but also for bathing, cleaning their feathers and to remove parasites. Waterers are better options than bird baths because they provide birds with fresh, clean water that prevents dirt and debris from contaminating it. In hotter climates or seasons, providing water for birds makes it easy for them to have access to a water source and retain their energy. By adding a water source, you also can attract a larger variety of birds to your yard. You may even attract more colorful birds that don't eat seed, but are in need of water!
