Feeder is fine By ozone

Had it out for a few days before the birds could figure it out. They can now. No problem.

The BEST! By Elsa

This is the only feeder that I've ever purchased that the squirrels couldn't breach or destroy. They did manage to bend the lower metal ring that serves as the perch slightly, but it hasn't affected the utility of the feeder at all. The only suggestion I could make to Perky Pet would be to redesign the lid as a screw-on rather than a twist-catch. I have several of these feeders and the catch fails fairly quickly as the squirrels try to yank on it. I end up having to use tape to secure the lid, but it's still the best feeder I've found for feeding the birds and NOT the squirrels!

Needs a Redesign By Kaye

For over a week, the birds in our yard seemed to prefer our other, more accessible, feeders. However, after cutting notches in the plastic over the Fortress feeding slots, several birds - of different sizes - were seen to be feeding at the same time. And, oddly enough, a smaller bird was sharing the same feeding slot as a larger bird.

We appreciate the time taken to provide this feedback and apologize for the experience.

Birds are creatures of habit and can take some time to adjust to a new feeder. To aid in this transition, we recommend temporarily taking down any other established feeders. Placing a shiny pie pan with a handful of seed on the ground under the feeder may also help attract them to a feeder.

Birds prefer other feeders By kwing

Unfortunately, my experience is like many others - in that, even though my Fortress was installed more than a week ago, no birds are using it. Occasionally, a bird will sit on a branch above the Fortress feeder. But, the bird will eventually choose to use one of our other feeders - which are being used regularly by a wide variety of birds.

Beat the squirrels! By lois54
I ordered this birdfeeder a couple of weeks ago, as a replacement for one I had for several years. I had purchased the first one at a local hardware store but could not get it this year - don't know why. It is a terrific feeder and is the ONLY one I have found for which the squirrels cannot get the seed!!!

Thank you for sharing this experience. Birds can be very picky eaters and may take some time to become accustomed to a new feeder in their environment. To encourage the birds to try the feeder, we recommend removing established feeders in the area. Also, placing a shiny pie pan filled with seed under the feeder will help attract birds to the area.

Looks good in catalogue photo. By Wally
After filling feeder with seed I hung it up. The plastic bin slipped from the cover, fell to the floor and broke, irreparably. I can't legitimately rate with a single star.

Better than most, by far By flyer
I have spent too much and thrown away too many squirrel-proof feeders. They are not squirrel-proof at all. This feeder, while only accommodating smaller birds, seems to truly discourage the rodents. I'm so glad they are still available. One came down in a wind storm recently and I find I can't do without them to supplement my array of feeders. And while it takes the birds time to get the hang of the feeder, mine have a devoted following finches, juncos, and chickadees.

Disappointed! By Smiley
I have had this feeder out for 3 or 4 weeks and have yet to see birds feed from it. Used several kinds of seed and still no birds. No squirrels as claimed;but, also no birds. Really disappointed!

We apologize that the birds have not yet found the new feeder. Birds are creatures of habit and can take several weeks to adjust to a new feeder. To help aid in this transition, we recommend removing any other established feeders from the area until the new addition is being used regularly. Placing a shiny pie pan with seed in it under the feeder will also help attract the birds.

We hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-PERKYPET (1-855-737-5973) with any additional questions.

Wild Bird Feeders - Expert Tips

Ideally a sheltered southeastern exposure location is best for hanging bird feeders since birds like to feed in the sun and out of the wind. Birds also prefer not to have any obstructions over their feeding area so they can see any predators.

Accessorize!

Bird Baths - A clean and reliable water source is an excellent way to attract birds to your yard, especially those birds that do not necessarily eat seed or nectar. All birds will seek out a water supply, not only for drinking but also for keep themselves clean and healthy.

Bird Houses - These are a good way to attract those species of birds that nest in holes. These structures should be made of an untreated wood (pine, cedar, etc.) and should have ventilation and drainage holes. It should be durable, and easy to check and clean.

Feeder Care

Keeping your feeder clean and full of fresh bird seed is very important to the health of visiting birds. It is recommended that you clean your wild bird feeder every two weeks.
