Like the feeders, but the “breakaway” parts break away and fall off! By Sue

I recently purchased 7 of these feeders, including one for me, to give as Christmas gifts. I hung mine right away, but although the birds are loving it, the closing sliders have fallen off twice already! I was able to find the parts the first time, but today I am missing one of them. I will still give the other 6 as gifts. Hopefully the sliders will stay on them!

    Design Flaws By bird feeder
Two things about this feeder that I'd change -
    1. The two perches on each side are too close together and it is not possible for even the smallest birds to eat at the same time.
    2. The sliding cover, that is activated when too large a bird or squirrel lands on the perch, is easily pulled off by the squirrels. It pops back on, but what is the point if it is pulled back off again. Each time this happened, the feeder was drained.

I love the design behind this bird feeder. One of the closing sliders came off the third day of use, so I'm not happy with that.

Me: 3, Squirrels: 0 By Jack Burbank
After trying everything I could think of for three years and failing to keep squirrels from stealing all the bird seed, I saw a "squirrel-proof bird feeder" advertised on Perky-Pet. I was expecting a $30+ price but was pleased to see it was only half that! So I took a chance and now I am the victor! Thank you Perky-Pet and

    Features sounded good By Bigbh55
I hung this by a wire from a tree thinking the culprit would not be able to slide down the wire to feeder - wrong! Darn thing slides down the wire like a kid going down a slide and attacks the top of feeder attempting to get into the top - which he has been able to do on a couple of occasions all while I watched in amazement.
I coated the wire and external parts of feeder with a slick cooking spray and enjoyed the pleasure of watching him slide down and struggle to stay on before falling off but he persisted and practice made him better as he repeatedly attempted to break in. Each time he slid off the feeder, he was able to knock feed to the ground and reap his reward, a little at a time but he repeated many times.
Am thinking about putting a bucket of cold water under the feeder on ground so that the feed would fall into water but better yet to enjoy watching him fall into water which I would hope he would find U enjoyable - and I would find most enjoyable!

Thank you for taking the time to share this feedback. To deter the squirrel further, moving the feeder may be our best option. It is recommended placing it at least 8-10 feet away from any places the squirrel may be able to leap at the feeder. We apologize that this has occurred and would be happy to provide additional assistance.

Please feel welcome to reach out to our Consumer Relations Team with any questions or concerns. We can be contacted directly at 1-855-PERKYPET (1-855-737-5973).

They found a way.... By Lapswimmer
These have worked pretty well for the most part, but since we had a big snow and the squirrels were extra hungry, a couple of them did find a way to wrap themselves around the body of the feeder and get at the seeds without tripping the closers. Great quality product and works well for the birds - they love it I have pout some seed out for the squirrels in a separate area so the will have their own, and this has kept them better satiated. Now, how do I get rid of the pine siskins, who come in big flocks and run the other birds away?

Perky pet Fortress ? squirrel proof feeder? By Maureen12
I bought this last month the top will not stay on and the squirrels know how to get it off you should see them diving into it all the way to the bottom finally taped it shut so far fooled them for how Long?

    Hello Maureen,

Thank you for your recent review that was submitted to Perky-Pet®. When deterring squirrels, it is very important to place at least 8-10 feet away from any location where they may be able to jump at the feeder. Using a baffle will also decrease the ability for the squirrels to access the seed in the feeder.

We apologize for this experience and are happy to provide additional assistance. Please feel welcome to our Consumer Care Department at 1-855-PERKYPET (1-855-737-5973).

    Poor Design By Dublin13
I've had these for a couple of weeks and have yet figured out how to keep the lid on when they're filled and ready to hang. With the plastic exposed, the squirrels will have a field day! Will likely return

To close the lid of the feeder, we recommend to first pull up on the hanging wire. Then, press the button on the lid and slide it down so it rests firmly on the feed reservoir. Once the button is released, the lid should be secure.

We appreciate this feedback and hope this information was helpful. Please contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-PERKYPET (1-855-737-5973) with any additional questions.

    easy to fill By Sonny
It's a decent design but make sure it doesn't fall to the ground. Mine did during the 1st week of use and it broke on one of the inside supports. It's being held by tape now.

    All About

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: All about the Fortress Breakaway Squirrel Resistant Feeder's “Product Spotlight" is our effort to highlight some of the great feeders in the product catalog. In each “Spotlight” a staffer reviews a feeder's design features and functions and talks about its performance in the field. Happy bird feeding!

    Anti-squirrel engineering

If you’re looking for a good feeder, then consider Perky-Pet®’s Fortress Breakaway Squirrel Resistant Bird Feeder. It’s got all the features you want in anti-squirrel engineering.

Now, you might laugh at the thought of “anti-squirrel engineering,” but you can tell a lot of thought went into this tough-looking feeder, and it’s all about keeping squirrels from stealing bird seed.

Its “tough” looks translate into some decent bulk. The Breakaway has some heft to it, for sure, but it’s bulky and thin at the same time. How so? Well, it’s designed to be top heavy --- and I mean that as a compliment. You see, it’s got a large lid and then it has a slight funnel shape going down to the bottom. This makes it easy to fill with seed, but, more importantly, the small base makes it easier to see birds that have landed on its two sets of perches. With the Breakaway, you always seem to have a good view of any bird.

The perches are attached to metal covers that close over the four feeder ports when a squirrel puts its weight on them. That’s where the Breakaway gets its name. If a squirrel tries to hold on to the perch, it “breaks” and the squirrel slides off the feeder. Once the squirrel falls, the spring-loaded perches snap back into place.

Beyond that, the Breakaway has some other great anti-squirrel features: Rounded edges so squirrels can’t chew through the feeder. Even the perches are rounded so they can’t hold on to them for long. The seed reservoir is made of a smooth, impossible to grip plastic. The lid and the feeder ports are metal, which also limits the any chew-through opportunities.

Some squirrels have mastered the art of peeling off the lids on bird feeders. That won’t happen with the Breakaway. Its cover has a push-button lock that pinches the feeder lid into place. It’s also got a metal hanging cord that squirrels won’t even think about chewing.

    Placement is key

Now just because it’s labeled a squirrel-resistant feeder, it doesn’t mean a little furball can’t ever get into it. As with any feeder, it’s all about placement. If you hang this too close to a railing, a squirrel can reach up and get inside without activating the “breakaway” feature. You’ll have the same problem if you hang the feeder too close to a nearby vertical surface.

But those are issues caused by improper use on a person’s part, not a specific problem with the Breakaway.

Overall, the Fortress Breakaway bird feeder from Perky-Pet® has some great features. It offers a great view of the birds and its huge hopper holds plenty of seed, which makes things even easier for any bird-feeding enthusiast. Definitely an A+ feeder.

If you own the Perky-Pet® Fortress Breakaway Squirrel Resistant Feeder, we urge you to leave a review for it!
