Has design flaws. The top on the one I purchased isn't strong enough to keep those pesky squirrels from accessing. They can also hang from the cable and still get at the seed. The cable broke after a few months. I would strongly suggest that it be pole mounted (with a baffle to help with furry marauders!) because if filled, it will likely not hang for very long. The squirrels around here are not deterred by safflower or hot peppered anything. Bummer!Response From WoodstreambrandsJennifer : Consumer Relations Representative

The squirrel a have figured out how to hang from the wire down over the side and eat the seed.Response From WoodstreambrandsPatty : Consumer Relations Representative
Thank you for sharing this feedback. We are sorry to hear that the squirrel has figured out a way around the deterrent features on this feeder. Adding cayenne pepper to the mix or using safflower seed can help to repel squirrels.

Review RateFeeder needs more thoughtful design and testing.
This feeder has so much potential. BUT: 1. It's heavy! I have to use 2 shepard's crooks side by side to support it with a full load of seed. 2. The front (behind the lever mechanism) is bowed. This allows our furry friends to dig into the seed behind the trough when the cover is down. 3. The seed does not flow to the trough easily. I have to give the feeder a shake to fill the trough every day or 2. As the seed dwindles, the birds use other sources.
Review Rateflawed feeder
terrible feeder, the seed tray is not sheltered and when it rains the seeds harden and have to be dug out with your finger and I also find a tray full of empty hulls that have to be emptied out. Not sure why this happens, but it's definitely a feeder with design flawsResponse From WoodstreambrandsPatty : Consumer Relations Representative
We appreciate the feedback and regret that the desired results were not seen.
Using a hulled or shelled seed can reduce the amount of mess that birds will leave behind from some seeds. If the weather will cause the seed to become saturated, we recommend temporarily removing a feeder or moving it to a more sheltered location.

Let me put it to you this way....kept the squirrells off it. But was no match for 3 black bears last Monday morning....lol
Review RateGood enough for now.
The birds love this feeder & the squirrels finally gave up once we moved it away from all possible jumping points.
Review RateMore like Squirrel Be Feasting
Took the squirrels less than 48 hours to figure out how to prop themselves up on the wheel that adjusts the tension and reach around and get seed. Greasing the wheel didn't deter. We also were mindful to make sure that the locking cap for the top was activated, but on the second day we found a squirrel INSIDE the feeder feasting away. Numerous times we chased it out, relocked it and would find the critter back inside within the hour. We had also ordered safflower seed as recommended but that hasn't stopped them, neither has pepper. Considering a falcon for the next step in our battle......jk
Review RateBirds love it! Squirels love it more
Nice looking feeder. Birds love it but squirels love it more. The top opens too easily and squirels get inside the feeder. I found a happy squirel inside sleeping on his back in the black oil sunflower seeds the other day...Response From WoodstreambrandsPatty : Consumer Relations Representative
We appreciate the time taken to provide this feedback and apologize for the experience.
This feeder includes a Sure-Lock™ cap to prevent squirrels from accessing the top of the feeder. After filling the feeder, push the button in and slide the lid down as tightly to the feeder as possible. Make sure the button is released fully to engage the locking mechanism.
Additional measures can be taken to keep squirrels away. We recommend placing feeders at least 5 feet above the ground and 10 feet from the nearest launching point, such as trees or decks. Cayenne pepper or safflower seed can be added to the mix to repel squirrels as well.

Review RateNot very squirrel resistant
Squirrels get the top off of this, too easily. Then , they crawl inside and feast. If the top threaded on, it would be more squirrel resistant. They can also sit on the tray and even though it closes, they get their claws between the glass and closed tray and peel seeds out that wayResponse From WoodstreambrandsLauren : Consumer Relations Representative
Thank you for sharing this valuable feedback. This feeder uses our Sure-Lock™ cap to help prevent squirrels from lifting the lid and stealing the seed. To secure the lid down, press the button at the top of the lid while holding the hanging wire taught. Slid the lid down and give the wire a slight pull up to ensure a tight fit.

I thought I would like this feeder because of it's many features. However, I cannot mount it on any flat surfaces because it has a slanted bottom. I cannot mount it on a pole because there is not a proper fitting. Clearly, based on current reviews, I cannot hang it from a tree limb because the weight of this feeder is significant and the cable is not strong enough. I also do not have trees with strong enough limbs to mount from a branch. I am sending it back to you and trusting that you will refund my full payment along with shipping costs.Response From WoodstreambrandsLauren : Consumer Relations Representative
Thank you for sharing this feedback. This feeder is designed to be hung from the metal cable and hold up to 12 lbs of seed. As an alternative, this feeder can also be pole mounted using a pole fitting into the 13/16ths of an inch hole on the underside of the feeder.
