Review RateWon't last
For the price should last more than one season. I bought two of these units and both failed after a year. Didn't realize they weren't working because the light is still flashing, and horses went through temp fence. I also bought a different brand also from Tractor Supply and guess what it is still working on the 2nd year. Won't buy Zareba again.Response From WoodstreambrandsKathryn : Consumer Relations Representative
We are sorry to hear about this experience! We recommend testing the voltage on the fence line periodically to ensure that there is adequate voltage to continue containing the intended animals. Damage to the fence or changes in grounding can cause a reduction in fence voltage. We have shared your comments with our Product Managers. This charger is also covered by our 30-day guarantee and a 1-year warranty. Please contact our Consumer Relations Team directly at 1-855-5-ZAREBA (1-855-592-7322) for assistance. Review RateJunk made in China
I purchased the 5 mile solar unit from Tractor Supply 4 years ago. I used it briefly for about 5 months to charge 600 feet of poly wire fence. I’ve kept it stored in its original box in my garage. I needed it again and charged it for 3 days. It’s not working and I came to the conclusion that the battery is dead after testing the voltage output. I called my local Zareba dealer who is nearly 2 hours away and he told me these units are garbage, they are meant to be a single use unit and should be thrown away once the battery dies. He also said that in 23 years of working on these units, it’s never the battery that’s the problem, it’s the lousy made in China circuit board that uses connections the size of sand grains and in the old days the connections were the size of your finger tip. And to make things even more difficult, the screws on the back are not designed for either a flat or Phillips head screwdriver, but are some bizarre screw head for which I cannot source a screw driver. I paid $165 plus 10% tax for my unit. I WILL NOT be purchasing another Zareba product ever!!Response From WoodstreambrandsLauren : Consumer Relations Representative
Thank you for sharing this feedback. The Zareba® 5 Mile Solar Low Impedance Charger (ESP5M-Z) is manufactured in the United States. These energizers are designed to last for many years for our customers. If the battery has gone out, replacements are available to get the energizer up and running again.
To open the battery compartment, we recommend using a torq screwdriver. We appreciate these comments and have shared these concerns with our Product Manager. Please feel free to contact us at 1-855-5-ZAREBA (1-855-592-7322 for additional assistance.
Review RateNo more power...
I've had this charger about 5 months now. Initially, it was fantastic, and worked exactly as I had hoped. Now, after 5 months of continuous use in a high sun-light area, the unit flashes red as it is working, but the fence is getting no power. I suspect it is the battery that has failed, but not sure how to test it? Any guidance would be appreciated.Response From WoodstreambrandsJennifer : Consumer Relations Representative
Thank you for providing this feedback! We are sorry to hear of this experience. The first ting we want to test is the energizer to verify the amount of voltage you are seeing. To do this:
• Turn off the charger
• Remove both the fence and ground wires from the terminals
• Turn the charger on
• Place the hooked end of your fence tester on the fence terminal and the probe end of the tester on the ground terminal to determine the output voltage. This energizer should output 8,600 volts (+/- 20%).
If you are not seeing the correct voltage from the energizer itself, the next step is to test the battery by removing it from the energizer and testing with a volt meter. We want to find out if the battery is holding a charge or if it needs to be replaced. This reading should be 6 volts. You may need a torq screwdriver, size 15 to access the battery compartment.

The 5 mile solar lasted a little over a year then zero output. Units in great shape and internally no signs of damage or burned out circuits. Light blinks however zero output. Certainly not the fence chargers of old that still work in all conditions for decades.Response From WoodstreambrandsJennifer : Consumer Relations Representative
If you are not seeing the correct voltage from the energizer itself, the next step is to test the battery. We want to find out if the battery is holding a charge or if it needs to be replaced. If the battery tests okay but you are still not seeing the expected voltage from the charger, please contact us directly for further assistance. Our Consumer Relations Team can be reached at 1-855-5-ZAREBA (1-855-592-7322).
Review RateDurability disappointing
I purchased two Zareba 5 mile solar low impedance chargers in the fall of 2014. I use them for two pastures, each about two acres, which we rotate for horses. Performance has been good, although the switches have been temperamental. This year, one of the switches failed. For the price - or a modestly higher price which I'd pay - the units should be more durable.Response From WoodstreambrandsJennifer : Consumer Relations Representative

Review RateRusted terminals
I am very dissatisfied with this model. During the first season, the terminals rusted so bad that the wire connectors failed to make good enough connection in order for the unit to work. Why put terminals that rust on the unit when you know it will be rained on?Response From WoodstreambrandsPatty : Consumer Relations Representative
We appreciate the time taken to provide this feedback and apologize for the experience.
Outdoor conditions can vary greatly. We recommend checking all parts of an electric fence system periodically, including the terminals on the charger. Any rust should be cleaned off with a wire brush.

Review RateWorked fine . . . for a modest time
Bought this at Tractor supply. This product worked well the first year. I turned it off as I didnt need it for a few months, then just went to turn it on again and it is non-functional despite having been out in the sun to charge. It is dead.. I expect something I pay this much money for to work more than a single season.Response From WoodstreambrandsAnthony : Consumer Relations Representative

Review RateNot durable for something that is meant to be exposed to outside conditions for the entire time.
Paid 172.00 for it and the on/off rocker switch already went out..only way to get it fixed per Zareba is to spend more money to take it somewhere to get it repaired. They sell mulitple circuit boards and other parts on the website..why not the on off switch.Response From WoodstreambrandsPatty : Consumer Relations Representative

All About Fence Chargers
Chargers are the heart of the fence system, providing the source for the electric current that flows through the fence wire.
The size of charger needed is dependent upon your fencing needs. These needs are determined by three main factors: the length of the fence (number of wires), the power source (AC, DC or Solar), and the type of animal being contained or excluded.
See our comparison charts of our fence chargers to help you determine which is best for your needs.
Types of Chargers
There are three main types of chargers: AC-Powered, Battery-Operated and Solar-Powered. The source of power for the charger to function determines the type of charger you will be using. Each type of charger has specific situations in which it is most desirable to use.
Selecting the right fence charger with adequate power for your enclosure is critical to keeping your animals safe.
