Expert Tips
WIRE SPACING
The height and spacing of the wires will vary with the animal you are containing. Position one electrified wire at animal’s shoulder height; this will cause it to hit the fence with its nose, making it back up.
POLY TAPE
Use poly tape for horse fencing or in rotational grazing since the animals can easily see this highly visible electric fence wire. Splice poly tape with splicer buckles specially designed for easy splicing and repairing of poly tape.
POLY WIRE
Poly wire is lightweight, so it is very easy to handle. You can rewind it very easily, move it and re-use it. Splice poly wire by tying a good, tight knot to maintain connections. Use a poly wire line tightener on each line and each side of the fence to maintain wire tension.
POLY ROPE
Also highly visible, this electric poly rope is also used for horses and livestock. When repairing poly rope, use a splicer designed for poly rope to maintain a good electrical connection.
FENCE CHARGERS FOR WIRE
Use a low impedance fence charger with poly wire and poly tape products.
PERMANENT PERIMETER FENCING
For a permanent perimeter fence, you may want to use high tensile or steel wire as your fence wire.

Fence Wire FAQs
Q: Why is poly tape better for use with horses than regular wire?
A: It's a matter of visibility. Horses can see the tape more readily than wire. Remember, electric fencing is a psychological barrier: after a horse has met up with a poly tape electric fence and has felt the shock, when it sees the poly tape again, it will remember the shock and stay away from the fence.
Q: Why should I place one wire at the animal's shoulder?
A: Positioning one electrified wire at animal’s shoulder height will cause the animal to hit the fence with its nose, making the animal back up. See illustration below.
Q: What is the advantage of using high-tensile wire rather than aluminum wire?
A: High tensile wire is designed to be both a psychological barrier and a physical barrier. High tensile wire not only carries a shock, it is also sturdy enough to prevent a large bull from penetrating the fence line (as long as it has been installed correctly.)
In addition, aluminum wire can stretch out over time as tension is applied to it (very slowly). High tensile wire will not stretch; this affordable barrier can last for many, many years.
