Rust! Harmful to the hummingbirds! By KLB

I was so pleased when I received this hummingbird feeder because I thought it was just beautiful! I did notice that my hummingbirds seemed to prefer my other feeders, but I assumed maybe it was just because they preferred the red color. However, I soon started to notice a metallic smell when I went to change the sugar water in my hummingbird feeder, and then rust began appearing on the inside of the metal portion of the feeder. I was extremely upset at the fact that the metal and rust was probably very harmful to my hummingbirds. I'm very concerned to see that this feeder is still being sold, especially since I have now seen many reviews from other users on various sites online that are mentioning the same problem with rust. Why are you still selling this feeder if this is a known problem?

Patty : Consumer Relations Representative

We appreciate the feedback and have shared this with our Product Managers.  The safety of birds is very important to us.

The metal part is powder coated to prevent rusting and extend the life of the feeder.  Please contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-PERKYPET (1-855-737-5973) for additional assistance. Our feeders are covered by a 30-day satisfaction guarantee and a one-year replacement warranty.

A few little quibbles By xkydivr

This is a pretty little feeder but there are a couple of things you should consider. It has no bee guards and only four feeding ports. My little ruby throat hummers like to come in a group especially when they bring the babies. It has no perches and they like to perch. As far as I could determine there is no way to open the base to clean it. One thing I can say, though. Woodstream's customer service is one of the best.

Best feeders By Nantim
Although one of the feeders I purchased leaked, I am still happy with PerkyPet. A new feeder is on its way to replace the defective one and the hummers love the other 2.

FAQs

Hummingbird Feeders - FAQs

Q: Do hummingbirds need a perch to drink nectar?

A: Since hummingbirds are able to hover, they typically do not need to have feeder perch. In nature, they normally feed while hovering. Even though this feeder doesn't have a perch, we've seen some hummingbirds land on its, grip the lip of its base and drink nectar.

While many of our feeders have perches, we've found that feeders without perches will somewhat discourage territorial behavior.

Q: How can I keep ants away from my hummingbird feeder?

A: Keeping bugs away from the sugary nectar inside a hummingbird feeder can be challenging. Ants can be kept at bay with one of our AntGuard®.

The AntGuard®, which is strong enough to hang a feeder from, uses Permethrin, a natural insect repellent.

Q: What do I need to clean this hummingbird feeder?

A: You will need water, dish soap and some sort of way to scrub the inside of the bottle. We suggest the Perky-Pet® Foam Feeder Cleaning Mop. Once you have your supplies assembled, take down your feeder, drain it and take it apart.

The base can be separated from its lid with the slightest pull on the metal lid. Now scrub all the parts gently and pay close attention to any buildups around the feeder parts. After scrubbing, rinse, reassemble and refill.

Q: When should I put this feeder away?

A: Some areas of North America will have hummingbird visitors all year long. Other areas, particularly the Northeastern and Midwestern U.S. and Canada, will only see hummingbirds in the late spring through the early fall.

We suggest you start putting out your feeders in April (for the early arrivals) and remove them by the first of October (for the late-leavers).

That's only a guideline though! If you continue to see hummingbird activity deeper into the fall, keep refilling your
