squirrel proof design
Squirrel Proof Design To offer defense against squirrels, this feeder boasts multiple great features. First, is the feeder’s weight-activated perch, which is calibrated to support the weight of birds but not squirrels. When squirrels try to gain access to the seed, the ports close off under their weight. Birds can sit on the perch without activating it. The sensitivity can also be adjusted to keep out larger nuisance birds. In addition, the miniature baffle provides an extra guard, while the metal frame discourages chewing.

To ensure a 100% squirrel proof feeder, placement is key! Hang the feeder with at least 18 inches of clearance on all sides so squirrels can’t easily reach the ports without activating the perch.

Enjoyable for Birds and You Three feeding stations let multiple birds enjoy dining at this Perky Pet® Squirrel Slammer Bird Feeder. The tube keeps the bird seed inside dry, while the clear cover provides shelter for your favorite backyard birds as they dine on the seed you provide. The roomy perches at the base let them relax and enjoy a meal from all angles while you enjoy their presence in your yard.
Simple and Durable
Simple and Durable Rely on the strong, durable design of the Perky Pet® Squirrel Slammer Bird Feeder. Its simple design features a metal base and ports that are well constructed to prevent damage from squirrels, while the clear plastic seed tube holds up great to time and inclement weather. The sturdy metal handle allows fuss-free hanging from a variety of locations around your property.
Easy to Fill and Clean When you need to add more seed to this Perky Pet® Squirrel Slammer Wild Bird Feeder, simply lift the top off and add bird seed. Its clear design ensures you know when it needs refilling, and it holds up to 3.5 lb of seed for a ready supply. Not totally squirrel proof By Leo
Nice feeder. Good size. But, being a squirrel proof feeder the main suspension part, green rod is made of plastic, which didn’t take long for squirrels to chew through it.

Tension dial doesn't catch. Birds cannot access seeds. Permanently shut. By Loren

After less than 6 months of use, the tension dial stopped working. I now cannot get the perch to open for the birds to access the seeds. It is permanently shut unless I manually hold it open. The tension dial just spins and spins.

I would definitely recommend this feeder. By Butterball

Love it. The squirrels can’t get in it. The only thing is the cardinals don’t seem to land on it. We’ve had nuthatches, chickadees and finches. We also have had downys. No Squirrels!!!!

Squirrels are smart.. By Stan

It only 2 days for the birds to enjoy the new bird feeder. Four days for the squirrels to figure out how to get feed. " Tony" learn to push his nose under the lid and push until his body had raised the lid high enough to get his body inside the tube. He could back out of the tube with no problem. Neighbors and I enjoyed the show. I used a paper clip to secure the lid, so far so good.

Squirrel feeder By Grandma3

My neighbor bought one and after a week a squirrel figured out how to lift the lid and crawl down the tube!!! We have had lots of fun watching him. Apparently he hasn't shared his secret because the other ones haven't figured it out! They are pretty cleaver animals. My neighbor used a paper clip on the top. We will see if that works.

anything I can do. By Ron

The feeder looks and works good but when I put small bird food in, it pours out of the bottom. Its OK with sunflower seeds because they are larger . Anything I can do?

Response From Woodstreambrands
Jules : Consumer Relations Representative

Hi Ron! The best seeds to use with this feeder are larger seeds, such as sunflower seeds. If you're looking to attract birds that prefer smaller seeds, we recommend taking a look at some of our mesh feeders. We're also happy to provide additional assistance at 1-855-PERKYPET (1-855-737-5973)

The slammer stopped slamming By Pete

After about a year of use, the ports would no longer slam shut when a squirrel jumped on it. So the squirrels were able to chow down at will. I will assert that no information has been found at this website about how to fix this problem. Also, even when the feeder was working well, a lot of seeds slide out of the feeding slots when the birds were feeding, and end up on the ground.

Redesign? By Joeski

I have to give it a 4 star because the weather cap above the feeder holes is too small. When it rains or snow is blowing the feed gets wet and in winter like now the seeds freeze. Also there must be a better way of clean the feeder. How about making a wider cap to prevent the elements in coming in

Squirrel tube feeds birds great. By Squirrel patrol

Squirrels open and get into the tube when low and then can not get out. Be prepared to start a squirrel rescue procedure at your home. Birds don’t mind if there’s a squirrel in the tube or not! I have photos.

Wild Bird Feeders - Expert Tips

Hanging Your Feeder

  • Ideally a sheltered southeastern exposure location is best for hanging bird feeders since birds like to feed in the sun and out of the wind. Birds also prefer not to have any obstructions over their feeding area so they can see any predators. more»

  • Bird Baths - A clean and reliable water source is an excellent way to attract birds to your yard, especially those birds that do not necessarily eat seed or nectar. All birds will seek out a water supply, not only for drinking but also for keep themselves clean and healthy.
  • Bird Houses - These are a good way to attract those species of birds that nest in holes. These structures should be made of an untreated wood (pine, cedar, etc.) and should have ventilation and drainage holes. It should be durable, and easy to check and clean. more»

Feeder Care

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What are the most popular bird seeds to use?

A: Black Oil Sunflower Seed is the most popular bird seed. It is much smaller than the traditional sunflower seed and best for those birds with smaller bills, such as the sparrow, junco and goldfinch. This seed is accepted by the greatest variety of birds.

Mixed Seed is also popular. It is best to buy the mixes that contain white proso millet, a tiny cream colored seed with a shiny shell. Mixes containing finely cracked corn and black oil sunflower are also preferred by a large number of birds.

Niger (Thistle Seed) is imported from Africa and Asia. Niger won't germinate, but it does have a tendency to become moldy due to lack of air circulation. If you notice mold on the seed, it must be removed from the feeder and the feeder must be cleaned thoroughly.

Q: How do I clean my bird feeders?

A: Before filling your feeder with fresh seed, it is recommended that the following precautions are taken:

  1. Remove all old seed.
  2. Soak feeder in a light water/bleach solution (9 parts water to 1 part bleach).
  3. Scrub feeder and allow to air dry.
  4. Rake and remove accumulated hulls and droppings from underneath the feeders.
  5. Spread mulch (bark or wood) under the feeder, replace mulch when soiled.
  6. Thoroughly wash hands after handling and cleaning feeders.

Q: What is the importance of providing water for wild birds?

A: Wild birds need fresh, clean water just as much as they need seed. Birds stay healthy by using water not just for drinking, but also for bathing, cleaning their feathers and to remove parasites. Waterers are better options than bird baths because they provide birds with fresh, clean water that prevents dirt and debris from contaminating it. In hotter climates or seasons, providing water for birds makes it easy for them to have access to a water source and retain their energy. By adding a water source, you also can attract a larger variety of birds to your yard. You may even attract more colorful birds that don't eat seed, but are in need of water!
